Week 1 in Saigon: 100 users and $0 MRR
This one started in the middle. Filming ran from 8 to 18 June and the story was worked out from the 16th: shooting and shaping overlapping, which is how most vlogs actually get made. 203 clips went in. Here is the spine that came out, the verdict before it went out, and what the numbers said after.
1 · The spine, shaped mid-shoot
Eight beats, settled while filming was still going on. One of them (the scoreboard the whole episode was supposed to set up) never made it to air, and the verdict caught it.
- hook Cold open Drop the viewer into sensory Saigon chaos: rain, scooters, noise.
- setup The bet 30-second context burst: Belgium → Saigon, the bet, the mission.
- transition Routine pivot Workout edit: the “my routine hasn’t changed” pivot. Sets up the character.
- payoff Saigon survival list The adaptation struggle, told as a cultural-difference list with humour and B-roll.
- transition Café pivot Hard pivot. Build just enough tension to make the product beat land.
- payoff 100 users Name TravelMaxing, show the dashboard number, explain what it means.
- setup The scoreboard Name what “making it work” looks like. Give the audience a scoreboard to follow. never aired
- cta Week 2 tease Tease week two and invite the audience along. Light, confident close.
2 · The verdict, before publishing
The strongest of the four verdicts on this site: three passes, three warnings, no fails. Printed exactly as it came back.
- ✓ Hook lands in the first ~15 secondsDeadpan “weather is so nice” line over rain footage is funny and lands immediately. A strong ironic open.
- ! Clear story arc / payoff, no sagTourism montage after the 100-user beat deflates momentum before the Da Nang cliffhanger, and it feels like a detour.
- ! Pacing and energy, minimal dead airGym fake-out montage and coffee section run long relative to their payoff; a few music-only stretches could tighten.
- ✓ Audio is clear and well-levelledVO is intelligible throughout; music sits under speech without ducking issues.
- ! Delivers on the planned promiseBeat 7 (the scoreboard / MRR target) is missing, so the viewer gets no concrete number or timeline to follow next episode.
- ✓ Clear call-to-action / deliberate endingDa Nang cliffhanger plus the 20-hour-bus gag is a solid teaser close; a subscribe CTA is absent but the hook-forward structure compensates.
3 · What actually aired
The published cut, read back and timecoded. Six beats survived from eight, and the scoreboard the episode was built to deliver is not among them.
- 0:00hookSaigon weather flex opening
- 0:30setupQuit jobs, moved to Vietnam
- 0:54payoffHonest downsides: noise and chaos
- 2:11payoffVietnam’s best perks: food, coffee, weather
- 3:53payoff100-user milestone and celebration
- 4:57transitionPacking up, heading to Da Nang
4 · Then the audience agreed with it
Two passes, run months apart, neither aware of the other. The verdict praised the ironic open; the retention data said the same open was costing viewers who did not yet know why to stay.
- Before publishingThe gym fake-out montage runs long relative to its payoff. After it airedCut the mock-routine bit to 10 seconds max; jump to the noise complaint immediately after the “this was a joke” pivot.
- Before publishingA funny open that never states what the viewer gains. After it airedReplace the weather flex with a bold statement or question that tells viewers exactly what they’ll gain by watching.
