Free course · Lesson 00

Two minutes on what this course is, why it's free, and how to get the most out of it. Then pick a door.
What this is
A free course on making long-format videos people actually click on, and actually finish. Eleven modules, from finding the idea to reading the analytics after you publish. Everything is open: no signup, no upsell wall, no "unlock the real secrets" tier. Each module ends with a printable pack, the checklists and swipe sheets from the lessons on one page you can keep next to the camera.
One promise, and it's the whole personality of the course: nothing in here is folklore. Every claim about how YouTube works is sourced. YouTube's own docs, its growth team on record, or named research. Where the evidence is thin, the lesson says so instead of inventing a number. A few beloved myths (tags, upload times, the 24-hour verdict) don't survive the treatment. And no, this is not a course about pumping out AI content. It's about making actual videos, the kind that grow a brand.
Why it's free
I build Vanpelt Studio, a storytelling copilot for solo creators, and this course is the thinking the app is built on. The trade is simple: the course teaches the whole discipline for free, unopinionated, just the raw basics of what makes a compelling video. A few lessons point at where the app automates the checks, clearly marked. You can run everything in here with a notebook and a transcript. The course never requires the product.
The conviction underneath both: most videos don't die in the edit or in the feed. They die earlier, quietly, in decisions nobody checked. The promise the title never made. The story that was never on the card. The structural hole you find on day three of editing, when it's expensive, instead of the evening after the shoot, when it's a twenty-minute pickup.
How to use it
The modules run in production order, and the order is the argument: what you make (ideas), how you package it (thumbnails, titles), how you build it (story, scripting, hooks), how you capture it (filming), how you keep people watching (retention, editing), and how you ship and learn (publishing, growth). Starting a channel from zero? Walk it front to back.
Mid-channel with a specific fire? Come in through the door that's burning. Clicks but no watch time: retention and story. Watch time but no clicks: thumbnails and titles. No ideas that excite you: ideas. And if you only take one module, take Story & structure. The rest of the course keeps pointing back at it.
Every lesson ends with a checklist, and the course pays off in the running of them: the evening after the shoot, the twenty minutes before upload. Print the packs. Run the checks. Ship the video. I'll catch you in the first lesson.
