Video storage calculator: how much footage fits on your card

Choose a camera and recording mode, or type a bitrate, and a card size. You get the recording time per card, then the cards, drive space and copy time for the whole shoot. Every preset bitrate links to the manufacturer page it was read from.

1. What are you recording?

Leave empty to ignore audio. Uncompressed stereo at 48 kHz, 16-bit is 1,536 kbps (48,000 × 16 × 2). It matters little next to the video.

2. Which card?

3. Plan the shoot

The two presets are the bus maximums the SD Association publishes (checked October 2026). Real copies are slower: the card, the reader, the cable and the drive all have to keep up. If you have timed a copy, type your own figure.

What this calculator does

It turns a recording mode into storage. Pick the camera and mode you shoot in, and it tells you how many minutes fit on one card, how many gigabytes an hour of footage takes, and which SD speed class the mode needs. Then it scales that to a shoot: cards to pack, drive space to free up, and how long the evening copy will take.

You need it before a shoot, when you decide how many cards to buy or pack, and before a trip, when you decide which drive comes along. The difference from other storage calculators is the camera table: you do not have to know your bitrate, and every figure in it links to the manufacturer page it came from.

Cards are one line of the prep. The rest is in plan before you shoot and in the free course lesson on a repeatable one-person setup.

How to use it

  1. Pick your camera and recording mode. You get the bitrate with a link to the manual page it was read from. If your camera is not listed, switch to Custom bitrate and type the figure from your camera menu.
  2. Enter the card size. You get the recording time per card, the gigabytes per hour, and what the card holds in decimal GB and binary GiB.
  3. Choose the speed class printed on your card. You get a plain yes or no on whether that class guarantees the write speed the mode needs, plus the card the camera maker asks for where the manual states one.
  4. Enter hours of recording per day, cameras and days. You get the number of cards to pack and the total footage.
  5. Tick the second copy and set a copy speed. You get the drive space to free up and the time one copy of a day takes. Where those copies should go is in how to organize YouTube footage.
  6. Copy the link. You get an address that reopens the calculator with the same setup, for a co-shooter or for your own notes.

The maths

File size = bitrate × time ÷ 8. A bitrate is in megabits per second and there are 8 bits in a byte, so 100 Mbps writes 12.5 megabytes every second, 750 MB every minute and 45 GB every hour. A quick rule: gigabytes per hour is the bitrate in Mbps times 0.45.

Decimal GB and binary GiB are the same bytes counted two ways. Card makers use decimal gigabytes (1 GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes). Many cameras and computers divide by 1,073,741,824 instead and still print "GB". So a 128 GB card reads as 119.2 GiB before anything is stored on it. Nothing is missing.

You cannot fill a card to the last byte. The file system takes a little, and you want to swap cards before the camera stops mid-take. The calculator assumes you use 95% of the printed capacity. That is our assumption, not a measured figure, and you can change it. As a check: Canon's own table for the EOS R6 Mark II gives 2 hr 21 min on a 128 GB card at 120 Mbps, and the raw maths on the full card gives 2 hr 22 min, so on that camera the real figure sits close to the full card and 95% leaves you a margin.

The result is a safe estimate, not a stopwatch. Most camera codecs use a variable bitrate, and a static scene is written at less than the nominal figure. Fujifilm says so in its manual: "The actual bit rate may be slower than the selected value depending on the subject." Plan with the nominal figure and you will usually have time left over. Canon states that its bitrates cover video only, so add an audio bitrate if you want that counted.

SD card speed classes

A recording at 100 Mbps needs the card to accept 12.5 MB every second without a pause. The speed class symbol on a card is the SD Association's guarantee of a minimum sequential write speed. Multiply it by 8 to get the highest bitrate that class is guaranteed to keep up with.

Symbol on the cardGuaranteed minimum write speedHighest bitrate it covers
V6 (same floor as Class 6)6 MB/s48 Mbps
V10 (same floor as U1 and Class 10)10 MB/s80 Mbps
V30 (same floor as U3)30 MB/s240 Mbps
V6060 MB/s480 Mbps
V9090 MB/s720 Mbps

Source: SD Association, Speed Class, checked October 2026. The bitrate column is that speed times 8. It has no headroom in it, and a camera maker may ask for more: Sony's a6700 guide lists SDXC V60 or higher for the XAVC S 4K file format as a whole (its maximum is 280 Mbps), so that applies even when you record it at 100 Mbps, and SDXC V90 or higher for XAVC S-I 4K at 600 Mbps (Sony a6700 Help Guide, Memory cards that can be used, checked October 2026). Where the maker states a requirement, follow the maker. Above 720 Mbps no SD speed class is a guarantee, and those modes belong on CFexpress or an external SSD.

Camera bitrates, storage per hour and minutes per 128 GB card

Each row below was read from the manufacturer page linked in it and checked in October 2026. GB per hour is the bitrate times 0.45. Minutes on a 128 GB card assume 95% of the card is usable (121.6 GB) and video only. Sony and Panasonic print the value of the camera's bitrate setting, Canon prints an approximate video bitrate, Nikon an average, DJI one maximum for the whole camera, and Apple a target data rate for each ProRes flavour. On 30p and 60p rows the PAL rates (25p, 50p) use the same bitrate unless the maker says otherwise.

If your camera records log in one of these modes, the camera finder for our free LUTs tells you which version of a look matches it.

What is not in the table, and why. GoPro HERO cameras and iPhone HEVC video are missing because their bitrates could not be read on a manufacturer page in October 2026; the figures that circulate for them come from third parties. Apple's iPhone ProRes page gives no bitrate either. It does say an external drive must sustain at least 220 MB per second for 4K 60 fps ProRes (Apple Support, About Apple ProRes on iPhone, checked October 2026), which is 1,760 Mbps and sits right at Apple's 1,768 Mbps target for ProRes 422 HQ at that size. That match is our reading, not Apple's statement. For any camera that is not listed, use Custom bitrate.

A worked example

You shoot a talking-head video and b-roll on a Sony a6700 in XAVC S 4K at 30p, 100 Mbps, on a 128 GB V30 card. You expect the camera to roll for about two hours.

  1. Storage per hour: 100 Mbps ÷ 8 = 12.5 MB per second, times 3,600 seconds = 45,000 MB, so 45 GB per hour.
  2. Usable card: 128 GB × 95% = 121.6 GB.
  3. Time per card: 121.6 ÷ 45 = 2.7 hours, so 2 h 42 min. Two hours of rolling fits on one card with 40 minutes to spare.
  4. Footage for the day: 2 hours × 45 GB = 90 GB. With a second copy you need 180 GB of drive space.
  5. Copy time: 90,000 MB ÷ 104 MB/s = 865 seconds, about 14 minutes per copy at the UHS-I bus maximum. Expect longer on a real reader.
  6. Card speed: 12.5 MB/s is well inside what V30 guarantees (30 MB/s). Sony's guide still lists V60 for this file format on the a6700, so the calculator shows both and tells you the maker asks for more.

What it does not do

  • It does not measure your files. It uses the nominal bitrate, so real footage of quiet scenes comes out smaller.
  • It does not know your card reader. The copy time is only as good as the copy speed you enter.
  • It does not cover proxy files, photos, or the slow-motion modes that record at a higher bitrate than normal modes.
  • It does not tell you whether the footage on the card is enough for the video. That is what the footage review checklist is for.
  • It does not rate specific card models. A speed class is a guaranteed floor, and the camera manual has the final word on what the camera accepts.
  • It does not list a camera whose bitrate we could not read from the manufacturer.

Vanpelt Studio, the desktop app behind this page, works on footage kept on your own disk and never uploads it, so the drive space you plan here is the space it works from.

Questions people ask

How much 4K video fits on a 128 GB card?

It depends on the bitrate, not on the resolution. At 100 Mbps a 128 GB card holds about 162 minutes, at 200 Mbps about 81 minutes, and at 600 Mbps about 27 minutes. Those figures assume you can fill 95% of the card.

How many GB is one hour of 4K video?

Multiply the bitrate in Mbps by 0.45. One hour at 100 Mbps is 45 GB, at 200 Mbps it is 90 GB, and one hour of 4K 30p Apple ProRes 422 HQ at 884 Mbps is about 398 GB.

Why does my 128 GB card only show about 119 GB?

Card makers count in decimal gigabytes (1 GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes) and many cameras and computers count in binary units (1 GiB is 1,073,741,824 bytes). 128 GB is 119.2 GiB: the same number of bytes, written two ways. The file system then takes a small share on top.

What SD card speed class do I need for 4K video?

Divide the bitrate by 8 to get megabytes per second and pick a class at or above it. V30 (or U3) guarantees 30 MB/s, which covers up to 240 Mbps, V60 covers up to 480 Mbps and V90 up to 720 Mbps. Check your camera manual too, because some makers ask for a faster card than the maths does.

Why did my camera record for longer than the calculator said?

Most camera codecs use a variable bitrate: a still, simple scene is written at less than the nominal figure, so the card lasts longer. The calculator uses the nominal bitrate, which makes its answer a safe estimate to plan with. The file system and the audio track can pull the other way by a small amount.

How much drive space do I need for a day of shooting?

Hours of actual recording times GB per hour, times the number of cameras, times two if you keep a backup copy. Two hours at 100 Mbps on one camera is 90 GB, so 180 GB with a second copy.

Why is my GoPro or iPhone not in the camera list?

A camera is listed only when its bitrate could be read on the manufacturer’s own manual or spec page. In October 2026 that was not possible for GoPro HERO cameras or for iPhone HEVC video, so they are left out instead of guessed. Use Custom bitrate with the figure from your own files.
