What YouTube does not publish

Numbers you will see quoted with confidence elsewhere that have no official source. We list them so you know they are estimates. What YouTube has said about its algorithm in 2026

WhatThe numberIn full, with its source
Where a title gets cut off No number published

YouTube does not publish the number of characters at which a title is cut off: its guidance only says viewers may see part of your title and to put the most important words first.

Figures such as 50, 60 or 70 characters are third-party measurements. The cut depends on the device, the surface and the width of the letters.

Source: YouTube Help: Thumbnail & title tips, checked October 2026.

Thumbnail display sizes No number published

YouTube does not publish the pixel sizes at which thumbnails are displayed on the home page, in search or in the sidebar: its thumbnail page gives upload sizes only.

Display sizes quoted elsewhere are measurements of one layout on one screen.

Source: YouTube Help: Add custom thumbnails on YouTube, checked October 2026.

Seconds needed for an engaged view No number published

YouTube does not publish how many seconds of watching make an engaged view: its page on how metrics are counted gives no threshold.

Daily upload limit A limit exists, no number published

YouTube limits how many videos a channel can upload each day across desktop, mobile and the API, but does not publish the number.

Source: YouTube Help: Upload YouTube videos, checked October 2026.

Daily custom thumbnail limit A limit exists, no number published

YouTube limits how many custom thumbnails a channel can upload each day, says the limit varies by country and channel history, and does not publish the number.

Daily post limit A limit exists, no number published

YouTube limits how many posts a channel can create in a 24-hour period, but does not publish the number.

Source: YouTube Help: Create a post, checked October 2026.

Videos per playlist No number published

YouTube's page on creating and managing playlists does not state a maximum number of videos per playlist, and says only that the number of public playlists a channel can create each day is limited.

Source: YouTube Help: Create & manage playlists, checked October 2026.

Profile picture upload dimensions No number published

YouTube does not publish a recommended upload size for profile pictures: its branding page says only that the image renders at 98 x 98 pixels.

The 800 x 800 figure found in many guides is not on the current page.

Tag limit in YouTube Help Not on the Help page

The YouTube Help page on tags states no character limit: the 500 character figure comes from the YouTube Data API reference.

Check my file against the spec

Drop a thumbnail or a video file. Your browser reads its dimensions, shape, weight and type and compares them with the rows above. The file stays on your computer: nothing is uploaded.

No file yet. A 1280 x 720 PNG, a 4K JPG or a 20 minute MP4 all work.

What this page is, and when you need it

This is a reference of the numbers you need when you publish on YouTube: how big a thumbnail can be, how long a title can run, what the chapter rules are, what to export at. It holds 113 facts. Each one was read on a Google or YouTube page, links to that page, and carries the date it was checked.

You need it at the moment you are about to export or upload and a number is in doubt. Most size guides are undated, give no source per number, and repeat old values. While building this page we opened several current guides that still list a 1280 x 720 thumbnail, a 2 MB thumbnail limit and 60 second Shorts. YouTube's own pages say 3840 x 2160, 50 MB on desktop and 3 minutes.

How to use it

  1. Type what you are looking for in the search box. The tables shrink to the rows that match every word you typed, and the address bar updates so you can share that exact view.
  2. Read the row. You get the number, a full sentence you can quote, and the official page it comes from.
  3. Press "Copy with source". You get the sentence, the source title, its link and the date checked on your clipboard, ready to paste into a brief or a message.
  4. Drop a file on "Check my file". You get a line per rule: whether your thumbnail or video meets it, and a link to the row it was checked against.
  5. Link to a topic or a single fact. Every topic and every row has its own anchor, for example #thumbnails or #upload-max.

How we check

A number goes on this page only after someone opened the source page and read it there. Search snippets, other size guides and memory do not count. Every row was last read on October 4, 2026. When YouTube Help and the YouTube Data API reference describe the same limit in different words, the row says so. When no official page gives a number, the row goes under What YouTube does not publish instead of borrowing someone else's estimate. There are 9 of those today.

The same facts are available as a machine-readable file at https://vanpelt.studio/tools/youtube-specs.json. It is built from the same data as this page, so the two cannot disagree. You are welcome to link to it or fetch it.

A worked example

You have exported a thumbnail from your editor: a PNG, 1280 x 720 pixels, 1.4 MB. You drop it on "Check my file".

  1. Format PNG. One of the two formats YouTube names. Pass.
  2. Width 1280 px. Above the 640 px minimum, below the recommended 3840 x 2160. It uploads fine, and it will look softer than it could on a TV.
  3. Shape 16:9. 1280 divided by 720 is 1.78, the recommended ratio. Pass.
  4. Weight 1.4 MB. Under the 2 MB mobile limit and the 50 MB desktop limit, so you can upload it from your phone or your computer.

The same picture exported at 3840 x 2160 as a PNG might weigh 9 MB. That passes the resolution row, and the weight row then warns you: fine from a computer, too heavy for the mobile app. That is the trade the two limits create.

Changelog: what changed, with sources

Changes we can trace to an official page, newest first. The 2024 and 2025 entries are here because many guides have still not caught up with them.

What this page does not do

  • It does not guess. Title cut-off points and thumbnail display sizes are not published by YouTube, so you will not find a number for them here.
  • It does not read the codec, frame rate or color space inside a video file. A browser cannot see those, so the file check covers type, size, length, resolution and shape only.
  • It does not cover advertising specs, YouTube TV, YouTube Music delivery or Content ID partner specs.
  • It does not update itself. The date at the top is the last time a person read every source. If a row is wrong, the source link next to it lets you see that in one click.
  • It does not tell you whether your video is good. The numbers get a file accepted. Whether your footage carries the story you planned is a different job, and it is the one the Vanpelt Studio desktop app does.

Questions people ask

What size should a YouTube thumbnail be in 2026?

YouTube recommends 3840 x 2160 pixels in a 16:9 aspect ratio, with a minimum width of 640 pixels, as a JPG or PNG. The older 1280 x 720 figure still works because it is above the minimum, but it is no longer the size on YouTube's own page (checked October 2026).

What is the maximum file size for a YouTube thumbnail?

50 MB when you upload from a computer, and 2 MB from the mobile app (10 MB for podcast thumbnails). The "2 MB limit" many guides quote is the mobile limit only (YouTube Help, checked October 2026).

How long can a YouTube Short be?

Up to 3 minutes, with a square or vertical aspect ratio and a maximum resolution of 1080p. The three-minute rule applies to videos uploaded on or after October 15, 2024 (YouTube Help, checked October 2026).

How many characters can a YouTube title have, and where does it get cut off?

The limit is 100 characters. YouTube does not publish where a title is cut off: it only says viewers may see part of it, so put the most important words first. Any figure such as 50 or 60 characters is a third-party measurement.

What is the longest video and biggest file I can upload to YouTube?

12 hours or 256 GB, whichever is less. Without a verified account you are limited to 15 minutes (YouTube Help, checked October 2026).

What bitrate should I export at for YouTube?

For SDR, YouTube recommends 8 Mbps for 1080p and 35 to 45 Mbps for 4K at 24 to 30 fps, and 12 Mbps and 53 to 68 Mbps at 48 to 60 fps. These are recommendations: YouTube says no bitrate limit is required.

How many subscribers do I need to make money on YouTube?

The earlier access tier opens at 500 subscribers with 3 public uploads in 90 days and either 3,000 watch hours in 12 months or 3 million Shorts views in 90 days. Ad revenue sharing needs 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 watch hours in 12 months or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days.

Does a YouTube view need 30 seconds of watching?

No. Since August 24, 2026 a view is counted the moment a video starts to play. The 30 second rule is for paid ad views that advertisers are billed for, not for the public view count.
