Publishing & SEO · Lesson 5
The pre-publish checklist
Everything this course taught, compressed into the twenty minutes before upload, packaging, metadata, session tools, and the two checks that catch career-grade mistakes.
Everything in this course converges on a twenty-minute window: the gap between “the video is done” and “the video is public.” It’s the highest-density decision window in the pipeline: packaging, metadata, session tools all get finalized, and it’s traditionally staffed by the worst possible version of you: 11pm-you, tired of the video, wanting it gone. The fix is the same as every other exhausted-judgment problem in this course: a checklist that doesn’t care how you feel.
1. Packaging (the ten minutes that price everything)
- Five title candidates existed; the survivor won. You are not typing the first title into the form right now.
- Title + thumbnail checked as a pair, at phone size: one promise, two surfaces, no repetition, readable at 120 pixels.
- The promise is one the video keeps: the comment test: you’d pin this title under the finished video.
- The hook was re-watched against the final title: the first 30 seconds start paying this promise, not the promise of the title you almost used.
2. Metadata (five minutes, by official weight)
- First two description lines: a second title, the promise restated in searchable, human words.
- Chapters from beats. 00:00, three-plus, named like beats, not parts.
- Below the fold: every promised link, sources, gear, the series playlist.
- Tags: sixty seconds, name and misspellings, per the platform’s own eulogy.
3. Session tools (three minutes)
- End screen: one aimed element with a spoken pitch, the next question this video opened, on the blocking you shot for it.
- Cards on the two moments that create needs: concierge, not banner.
- The playlist journey updated. This video slotted in order, the series link wherever the series is the product.
4. The two career-savers (two minutes)
- The upload watch: first minute and last minute of the processed upload, on the platform. This catches the wrong-file export, the missing audio channel, the black last-forty-seconds: the mistakes that are invisible in your NLE and mortifying in public. Two minutes, every time, forever.
- The stranger pass: one person (or the written viewer, simulated honestly) reads only the title and thumbnail and says what they expect. If their answer isn’t your video, tonight is the cheap night to fix it.
Then publish, verify the pipeline once, and close the tab. The remaining energy has two good homes: the seven-day post-mortem on the calendar, and the next video’s plan, which, if this course has done its job, already exists in the bank with its receipt attached.
Print this, tape it next to the footage-review checklist, and let the two of them bracket every video: one guards the shoot’s evening, one guards the upload’s twenty minutes. Between them, the expensive mistakes (the structural hole found on day three, the promise broken in public) stop being possible to make silently.
The meta-check
- The checklist ran in order: packaging → metadata → session tools → the two savers.
- Nothing was decided in the upload form that wasn’t decided before it.
- The processed upload got its first-and-last-minute watch.
- A stranger’s expectation matched the video.
- The tab is closed; the post-mortem is on the calendar.
🎬 Video script
- Open on 11pm-you typing a title into the upload form: “Every lesson in this course is about to be decided by the most tired person in the building.”
- Run the four sections as an on-screen checklist over a real upload, timers running.
- Dramatize both career-savers with real examples: the wrong-file upload caught, the mismatched expectation caught.
- Publish on camera, verify once, close the laptop.
- Close: “Twenty minutes, once per video. It’s where everything you’ve learned compounds.”

Key takeaways
- Publish decisions made at 11pm in the upload form are the worst versions of those decisions, checklist them.
- The order is packaging → metadata → session tools → final watch.
- The checklist is where the whole course compounds; it's twenty minutes once the pieces exist.
